THIS NOVEL, written by an ex-army officer of high rank, is aptly titled ‘Gadi daatidavaru' — those who went beyond the border. The writer has so brilliantly knitted the story that almost all important characters knowingly or unknowingly overshoot the limits, whether it is traditional practices or social dogma.
Devayya lays down his life for the sake of his country in the Indo-China war on crossing the national boundary. Born as the only son in an affluent family, he had an aristocratic upbringing. The girl whom he loved from his younger years, Kasi, was born to a woman (Tulasi) who, though leading a clean life, had a contemptible family background. Determined to live with dignity, Kasi falls in love with a professor who, as it turns out, is already married and has a wife and a child.
Then there is Raghaiya Setty, a businessman known for his philanthropy and love for art, marries the not-so-beautiful but affluent Seethamma, under compulsion from the elders. While Setty is drawn towards Tulasi, his neglected wife, for her part, transgresses the ‘border' in search of marital satisfaction.
Apart from providing penetrating insights into human behaviour, the novel challenges the entrenched social mindset vis-a-vis women. MALAYALAM
