Collection of true stories
Thursday, 15.04.2010, 09:56am (GMT+5.5)

THIS BOOK presents true life stories of agony, hope, inspiration, success, and survival. Some of them strain credibility, some others are awe-inspiring, and yet others are of the edge-of-the seat kind. Overall, it lives up to the adage: ‘truth is stranger than fiction”.

There are messages to be imbibed and lessons to be learnt from these stories, as for instance on courage, grit, determination, and supreme self-confidence, the qualities required to succeed in a life that is full of risks, dangers, and challenges.

The story titled “Padaga Vippina Thupaaki” describes how the principal of a school, by showing exemplary courage, presence of mind and level-headedness in handling a gun-wielding intruder (a former student), averted an imminent massacre and saved the lives of children. “Maanava Mrugaala Madhya” chronicles a horrific case of rape and attempt to murder. It is her unflinching faith in her own self and divine intervention that gives a woman, the victim of rape and with 32 stab wounds, the mental strength to appear in court, recount the gory scene, and get the perpetrators punished. Udayinchina Hrudayam” is about the lives of twin-sisters, one leading a happy normal life and the other afflicted by the Down's Syndrome, and the story is told movingly and with due sensitivity. A wonderful collection of 50-odd stories indeed!

By Kasturi Murali Krishna, EMESCO Books, Suryaraopet, Vijayawada-2. Rs. 125.
