HYDERABAD: A division bench of the A.P. High Court comprising Justice A. Gopala Reddy and Justice Samudrala Govinda Rajulu on Thursday reserved orders in writ petitions filed challenging the government action in providing for voting rights for ex-officio members of the Greater Hyderabad Metropolitan Corporation (GHMC) during the elections to the post of Mayor.
The bench heard at length the arguments of the advocates appearing for the petitioners and respondent government. The petitions were filed by Loksatta Party represented by K. Srinivasa Rao and another person.
They complained that presence of such large number of ex-officio members in the electoral college electing the Mayor vitiates the democratic process. They said that the people’s verdict will be subverted. The government said that these ex-officio members are also people’s representatives of and this was not unconstitutional.
