GHMC seeks ex-officio members’ option to vote
Tuesday, 01.12.2009, 10:03am (GMT5.5)

HYDERABAD: With the precise number of ex-officio members eligible to vote in the Mayor and Deputy Mayor election still proving to be elusive, election authorities of GHMC have decided to throw the ball in their court itself.

Election Authority and Commissioner S.P. Singh sent an ‘option’ form to all MPs and MLAs representing a constituency and also to MLCs registered as voters within its area as on filing the nomination or on the date of nomination by the Governor.

The MPs or MLCs concerned who have already chosen a municipality as an ex-officio member other than the municipal corporation can also participate in the proceedings of the meetings, but they are not entitled to vote. The Commissioner informed the ex-officio members that the State Election Commission (SEC) has notified the poll date as December 4, 11 a.m.

The government too clarified on eligibility of ex-officio members who can vote in the meetings – a Rajya Sabha MP should continue to be the elector of any constituency within the GHMC jurisdiction while MLCs need to be electors only during his nomination time, he explained.

Though the government said it was not necessary for the Commissioner to obtain options from ex-officio members, election officials seem to have opted for a safe route. Hence, in his communication to all ex-officio members, Mr. Singh requested them to send the filled in ‘option form’ at the earliest. In the meantime, Hyderabad Collector Navin Mittal, the designated officer to conduct the Mayor poll, sent notices to all the newly elected 150 corporators and ex-officio members to participate in the first meeting of GHMC’s elected council to be held at Jubilee Hall, Public Gardens.
