You can take on climatic challenges
Wednesday, 10.03.2010, 10:16am (GMT+5.5)

With the temperatures rising at an alarming rate, one wonders if he or she could contribute in any way to avert or slow down the rapid changes in the climate. Recently, COVA (Confederation of Voluntary Associations) in association with British Council has organised “Creative Expressions of Climate Challenges” inter-school and collegiate competitions at Indira Priyadarshini Auditorium in the city. Students of various schools participated competitions like Slogan writing, one act play, Quiz and Short film making on Climate change.

Coming together

For many, it was a platform to tell about he growing danger of environment destruction and how to save it. Mrs. Amala Akkineni, Director, Blue Cross, Hyderabad inaugurated the event. She said “I'm happy to see these young minds coming together to create awareness on climate change which has become a global problem. Also, it is our duty to preserve the environment for the future generations. Apart from this, animal conservation is another key issue that has to be looked into and taken care of.”

One-act-plays depicted how we humans, are directly or indirectly responsible for the environmental devastation and how we ought to protect it.

Short films were based on civic problems in their respective localities with students suggesting preventive measures through their films.

“In order to make a short film, we had to do a lot of research on the issue we were dealing with. Our issue was about the drainage line that was left open and students had approached the GHMC officials and other higher officials to look into the problem.

This problem has been existing for many years and necessary measures were not taken by the officials. So, we decided to highlight this issue and students put their best into it, to curb the problem by persuading higher officials, to take immediate action” says Mohammed Sajid Ali, Principal, Iqra Mission High School.

When asked about individual contribution towards the environment, Ghazala of Std. VI of Rosary Convent says “I believe that whatever God has given to us is through nature and I think we are here to protect it. I'm a member of the ECO club and therefore, I'm a part of the change”. Neelam of Std.VI of Rosary Convent feels “everyone talks about change but no one actually knows how to be a part of it. Being a member of ECO club and creating awareness on environment, I'm happy that I'm contributing to save earth in some way at least.” Ejazuddin of Std.IX of Iqra Mission High School says, “I plant a tree every month and also ask people to do the same. I love doing it and I'm making a difference.”

So when we know that these young minds can do some of the most significant things to save our only home, why can't we?

So why not Reduce, Reuse and Recycle and after all “What surrounds us is what defines us.”
