The agreement was signed here on Friday by CII Chairman G. Vivekanand and USEPA administrator Stephen L. Johnson. The US delegation went around the Godrej-CII Green Business Centre in Madhapur here and praised its energy-efficient initiatives.
At a press conference, Mr. Johnson said over 100 corporates had teamed up in the Climate Leaders Programme being run in the US to reduce Green House Gas emissions. He explained how US companies received blue stars for energy efficiency and said in 2006 alone, goods worth US $15 billion were bought by people.
The reduction of about eight per cent of emissions was equivalent to the exhaust of 25 million automobiles, he said. Clean environment directly impacted economy and quality of life. Globally, USEPA's priorities revolved around clean air, affordable energy, safe and clean water and communities' participatory role in eco-protection.
Asked about emerging threats from cyber waste, he said efforts were on to increase the recycling element in IT industry. Mr. Vivekanand said the pact would help CII aim at roping in 500 companies for voluntary efforts for eco-protection.
