In response to the editorial published in The Hindu dated 9th December, 2009, Mr. Baireddy Satish of Telangana Lecturers Forum has written as follows:
The editorial “correct diagnosis and wrong cure” was completely misplaced and short-sighted. The Telangana issue is not an issue of economic development. It is an issue of self-respect and cultural identity. Your editorial lacks historical and ground realities to buttress your argument and views.
Telangana had already enjoyed a separate statehood in the history. It must be noted that it was one of the members of UNO before being merged into Indian State with military might. Our demand is not for a separate State, what we demand is the revival of statehood which it had enjoyed in the past.
Historically it has been a victim of despotic Nizam Rule, a semi-feudal system, internal colonism and imperialism.
Our irrigation facilities hardly match with that of other regions. There was not a single dam on either rivers flowing through Telangana namely Krishna and Godavari. Our farmers have committed suicides due to lack of water and power supply. In terms of employment, in proportion to our population which constitutes more than 42 % of total Andhra Pradesh population, it is entitled to get 5 lakh jobs but the share is only 3 lakh. Even the agreements including Gentlemen and Mulki rules were grossly violated by Andhra rulers. The GO 610 was not implemented which categorises local and non-local as per presidential order.
The statehood is a democratic aspiration of four crore people of Telangana. The media are misinterpreting and showing in bad light the entire movement, because it is fully controlled and operated by Andhra capitalists. With regard to Hyderabad it was, it is and it will be an integral part and parcel of Telangana.
Telangana without Hyderabad would remain a headless body. Hence, it is a natural demand for statehood which cannot be denied. The ‘patient’ demands not just economic packages but surgical treatment of being separated and accorded statehood which it had already enjoyed.
