Sabitha springs a surprise
Thursday, 31.12.2009, 10:46am (GMT+5.5)

HYDERABAD: Home Minister P. Sabitha Reddy, who kept away from a meeting convened by Chief Minister K. Rosaiah on Tuesday, to review the law and order situation ahead of the Telangana bandh, sprang a surprise by participating in a similar meeting on Wednesday.

Asked by reporters later if she revised her decision in the wake of the Telangana Ministers’ resolve to keep away from all official engagements, Ms. Sabitha said she was not a party to it. “How can I be accountable for a decision taken by others? Who are they to take decision on my behalf ?”

She said she had more sensitive and greater responsibilities to discharge as Home Minister compared to other Ministers. “My duties are different,” she asserted and made it clear that she would continue to attend such meetings.

When it was pointed out that she was among the Ministers who had sent their resignations to Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Ms. Sabitha said the question of inconsistency would arise only if the resignations sent by them were accepted. Asked why the resignations were sent to the Congress president instead of the Chief Minister, she said it was party high command which gave them the Assembly ticket and it was proper to send the papers to it. The Chief Minister would accept the resignations only if the high command asked him to do so. She said, as one belonging to Telangana region and as wife of late P. Indra Reddy, she had a special commitment towards the region and she would fulfil it through one method or other.

Earlier, at a media conference, Mr. Rosaiah asserted that he had postponed the Cabinet meeting only in view of the bandh in Telangana called by Joint Action Committee.

He said a bandh would inconvenience people in several ways, and so, Ministers were expected to be present in Hyderabad and follow the situation to initiate measures to mitigate hardship to public.
